Written by Pete Eyre: A few months back I spoke with Jacob Crawford, long-time Cowatcher based out of Oakland, CA about possible collaborations. Jacob has been Copwatching since 2000 as well as producing know-your-rights videos and leading in-person training sessions to educate people on how to best exercise their rights when stopped by the police and while observing police interactions with others. You can see his video "These Streets Are Watching" below. It includes footage from Berkeley, Cincinnati and Denver. http://www.youtube.com/embed/sxIRL3QCaRI While our initial conversations left us feeling that videos about watching the police and current issues around police unaccountability seemed like a logical collaboration, Jacob pointed out that Cop Block, which initially began as a website to serve as a clearing house for police issues, recently has been inspiring people around the country to start their own offshoots. While Copwatchers and Copblockers stand united in the task observing police and advocating for people's rights, Jacob felt that before we embarked on such a large and incredible task of developing weekly or biweekly videos about Police issues, that it'd make sense to create a Cop Block 101 video that could be used to help communicate just exactly what Cop Block is and how it works. Jacob came out to Keene. NH and stayed with Ademo and I, witnessed Copblocking in practice and we sat down and created this video. We hope you like it, and we hope that people everywhere realize that regardless of what group they form or affiliate with, that we are all in this amazing struggle together. It is an opportunity to learn form each other and to grow as people and as a movement against police oppression. He is active in Oakland where police are so corrupt they are about to be the first department in US history to be taken over by the feds. Jacob and I are currently brainstorming a police accountability video series to help people make the connections between police incidents that happen across this country and world and ways the public can stand up against what they feel is immoral conduct and behavior. Our hope is that these videos will act as a bridge to bring together people's voices, experiences, and perspectives related to police unaccountability so that we can move forward with more-effective strategies to address these issues. Look out for our upcoming outreach and input videos as we prepare to launch this new series. We are looking for correspondents, editors, writers, lawyers, and anyone that is interested in contributing to this project. Hit me up at [email protected] if you think you'd be a good fit. We look forward to your thoughts and ideas, keep an eye out for us!!!!
