Seventy-Seven Times - Matthew 18: 21-35 Lent Wk 3, Tuesday 0:00 Begin 1:52 Reflection 4:10 Hymn A reflection on the Gospel of St Matthew 18:21-35 Peter thinks he is being generous. “Seven times?” Surely that must be enough. But Jesus stretches mercy beyond calculation: “Seventy-seven times.” Forgiveness in the Kingdom is not arithmetic; it is transformation. The parable is deliberately exaggerated. A servant owes an impossibly large debt — more than a lifetime could repay. When he falls to his knees, the master does not negotiate; he cancels everything. The debt is erased not because it is small, but because the master is merciful. Yet the forgiven servant refuses mercy to another who owes him a trivial amount. Having received compassion, he withholds it. The tragedy is not simply cruelty — it is forgetfulness. He has forgotten what it felt like to be spared. Jesus is not teaching about financial accounts but about the heart. We stand before God with debts we cannot settle: pride, resentment, selfishness, indifference. And yet the Father releases us — not reluctantly, but freely. The cross is the great cancellation of debt. The warning at the end is sobering. Mercy refused becomes mercy withdrawn. Not because God is fickle, but because a heart closed to others cannot remain open to Him. Forgiveness does not deny hurt. It does not excuse injustice. It chooses, however, not to imprison another in their worst moment. To forgive is to live as one who knows they have already been forgiven. In the Kingdom of Heaven, mercy received must become mercy given. Anything less is a contradiction of grace. Let us pray. Lord of boundless mercy, You have forgiven us more than we can measure. Yet how quickly we clutch small grievances And demand repayment for minor wrongs. Free us from hardened hearts. Remind us of the day You cancelled our debt And called us beloved. When forgiveness feels costly, Let us remember the Cross. When resentment whispers loudly, Let Your mercy speak louder still. Make our hearts like Yours — Quick to pardon, slow to condemn, Joyful in releasing others into freedom. Amen. Hymn: Seventy Times Seven Verse 1 Lord, You have cleansed my guilty stain, And set my spirit free; So teach my heart to do the same, As You have done for me. Verse 2 When I would cling to wounded pride, And nurse my bitter pain, Remind me of the cross You bore, And love that breaks the chain. Chorus Seventy times seven, Lord, Your mercy has no end; As You forgive, so teach my soul To love as You befriend. Verse 3 No debt too small, no wrong too deep, That mercy cannot heal; Your grace restores, Your pardon flows, And makes our spirits kneel. Chorus Seventy times seven, Lord, Your mercy has no end; As You forgive, so teach my soul To love as You befriend. Bridge From cross to crown, Your mercy flows, Through every age and land; The debt is paid, the chains are loosed, By Your redeeming hand. Verse 4 Till every heart has learned to bless, As we ourselves are blessed, We’ll walk the path of endless grace, And enter into rest. Chorus Seventy times seven, Lord, Your mercy has no end; As You forgive, so teach my soul To love as You befriend.
