Cali in Posters: A Conversation with La Linterna Print Shop

Since it was founded in 1934, La Linterna, an old-school typography print shop, has been illuminating the city of Cali, Colombia with its colorful publications. Join us for a special artists’ talk led by current members of this poster factory and learn about their use of hand-cut vinyl templates in century-old printing presses to create a poster aesthetic that has become synonymous with Colombia’s salsa capital. La Linterna, considered an international heritage site for poster art, is home to several printing presses from the 19th century. Its prints and posters represent an important dimension of the region’s popular culture as they are used not only to promote cultural events but also to provide artful commentary on a range of social-justice issues.
