Webinar 182 Probing New Physics with Neutrinos in Ice, Water, and Rock Speaker: Nicholas Kamp, Harvard University (USA) Abstract: Natural environments can be leveraged to build large-scale neutrino detectors. We begin with the IceCube neutrino observatory, which detects neutrino interactions in a cubic kilometer of South Pole Ice. IceCube can use the unique "double cascade" signature to search for heavy neutral leptons (HNLs), including an HNL model that explains the long-standing MiniBooNE anomaly. We discuss the current status of searches for such double cascades and the prospects for improved HNL searches at IceCube. Next, we introduce two new experimental concepts using natural detectors to observe neutrinos from the Large Hadron Collider: SINE, which detects neutrino interactions in bedrock, and UNDINE, which detects neutrino interactions in Lake Geneva. These experiments can measure the forward production of charmed hadrons in proton-proton collisions and potentially set strong constraints on HNLs. Finally, we discuss yet another experimental concept—the “neutrino kaleidoscope”—in which the neutrino flux from a muon collider is directed toward a neutrino telescope such as IceCube, KM3NeT, or P-ONE. The high rate of TeV neutrino interactions in this configuration enables world-leading sensitivity to non-standard oscillations from eV-scale sterile neutrinos and violations of Lorentz invariance.
