Preludio Triston by Maximo Diego Pujol

Preludio Triston by Maximo Diego Pujol, one of his five preludios, is a very lyrical and beautiful guitar piece. Maximo Diego Pujol is an Argentinian guitarist and composer, and most of his compositions are for solo guitar or guitar ensembles. He has a background in both classical guitar and rock and roll. The word triston translates from Spanish to the English word "sad", or "melancholy". One definitely hears that sad character throughout the piece. I started learning this piece fairly early on in my journey on the guitar, probably in my sophomore year in college. That would make it sometime in 2004-2005. -My grandmother became very ill around the time I started learning the piece, and I remember playing parts of it for her. She passed away before hearing it finished. Suffice to say I have an ample emotional wellspring to draw on for the "melancholy" prelude. I think about her when I play it, and she would have enjoyed how it turned out. She always supported my music and loved listening to me play. It is a difficult piece to master just like all five of the preludios, and I am still working on perfecting the strident middle "B" section. I really love the artificial harmonics that echo the main melody at the very end. This was the first piece where I ever encountered that particular technique and it blew my mind! So many cool sounds are possible out of one instrument. Why I love the guitar.
