Vomiting in the NICU Population Speaker: Wendy Burdo-Hartman, MD, Nationwide Children’s Hospital Course Summary: This one-hour webinar provided information on vomiting in the NICU, which is a very common issue. Finding the cause can be a challenge. The webinar discussed the causes of vomiting, the role of thickened feeds in the NICU, and possible treatment after discharge. Dr. Wendy Burdo-Hartman is a neurodevelopmental pediatrician, who has been in practice for 26 years. She completed undergraduate studies in nutrition at The Ohio State University as well as medical school there. She completed her pediatric residency at what is now Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids Michigan. She was in private pediatric practice for 10 years and then worked for 2 years in Neurodevelopmental Pediatrics at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis, Indiana. She was invited back to Helen Devos Children’s Hospital to start and grow the Neurodevelopmental Program at DeVos. She spent 10 years there expanding the NICU Follow-up Program, establishing a Multidisciplinary Developmental Pediatrics program. While there, along with Michelle Mastin, PhD in pediatric psychology, she established an Intensive Pediatric Feeding Program. In July, 2012 she accepted a position at Nationwide Children’s Hospital to grow the Pediatric Feeding Program , including an Intensive Feeding Track. Along with Rob Dempster, PhD in Pediatric Psychology, they have established the Comprehensive Pediatric Feeding Program. This program uses a transdisciplinary model for children with complex feeding problems. Other interests include working with children who have complex neurodevelopmental disabilities, particularly cerebral palsy.
