Cervical spondylitis, also known as cervical osteoarthritis or neck arthritis, is the age-related wear and tear of the bones and cartilage in the neck. Common symptoms include neck pain, stiffness, headaches, and a grinding or popping sound when moving the neck. Treatment focuses on managing pain and may involve physical therapy, medication, or, in severe cases, surgery. Causes Age: The most common cause is the natural degeneration of the spinal discs and vertebrae over time. Wear and tear: Over time, the discs can lose fluid, become stiffer, and the cartilage can wear down. Risk factors: Other factors include previous neck injuries, a sedentary lifestyle, occupations that require heavy lifting or repetitive motions, and poor posture. Symptoms Neck pain: Can be a dull ache or sharp pain, often worse when standing, sitting, or moving the neck. Stiffness: A stiff neck that may cause a clicking, grinding, or popping sensation when moving. Headaches: Especially pain at the back of the head. Numbness or weakness: In the arms, hands, or fingers if nerve roots are compressed. Loss of balance: Can result from pressure on the spinal cord. Treatment Physical therapy: Can help manage pain and improve flexibility. Medication: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can help reduce pain and inflammation. Soft neck collar: May be used to provide support and reduce strain. Surgery: Recommended in severe cases where there is significant nerve or spinal cord compression. Home management: Maintaining good posture and managing stress can also help relieve symptoms.
