India: Delhi heads into lockdown as Covid cases soar across country

New Delhi officials have announced a week-long lockdown as an explosive surge in Covid-19 cases pushed the health system of the Indian capital to its limit. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said the "health system is now incapable of accepting patients in large numbers". Kejriwal said the lockdown measures were necessary to prevent a situation where people are "dying in the streets." In the last week, new cases in India have reached more than 260,000 a day, while 77 cases of the Indian variant of Covid have now been reported in the UK.
