Going Home -- Ken Colyer 1975 It was in the early fifties in the Netherlands, when I got interested in jazz and started to learn the cornet, that we were all very interested in some of the traditional jazz that came from Great Britain. Humprhrey Lyttleton of course but then there was this honest sound of trumpeter Ken Colyer. They called him the "Governor". Much of his music came from New Orleans trumpetplayers, like Bunk Johnsson, but especially Mutt Carey who he had met on his trip to New Orleans in the late forties. We bought all Ken's LP's like these 10" ones called Back to the Delta and New Orleans Joys. Much to our surprise Ken came to Canada in and together with our Climax Jazz Band we played several weeks together and in 1975 he joined us for our annual trip to the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage festival. Since we had been there before we were able to line up a tavern to play during our stay. We had chartered a plane and some 300 fans came with us. When we arrived the Tavern owners were still hammering a stage together and we negotiated a fee of free drinks and a meal at the end of each night. This was the Esplanade Cafe at the corner of Toulouse and Bourbon Streets. Of course we had our own fans but we also met many American fans and tourists. A few of these came in with gear and recorded our sets. At some time Ken wanted to play his most favourite piece. We played 'Going Home', Even though the overall recording quality is pretty good one disturbing factor was the fact that an American fellow walked in with his gut bucket bass and decided to join us as well.
