According to the 2023 Trafficking in Persons Report from the US Department of State, the South African government does not fully meet the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking, but is making significant efforts to do so. Last year the Human Sciences Research Council estimated that a possible 250 000 people have fallen victim to human trafficking in South Africa alone. On Sunday, police rescued 90 undocumented Ethiopian nationals who were allegedly being kept against their will and under inhumane conditions. Is enough being done to tackle human trafficking in South Africa?
