Salt and Banjo collaborated on a beautiful large-scale piece together and the accompanying description that Salt wrote up of the process of its creation was both inspiring and intriguing. As two of the foremost glass artists in the world (and in my humble opinion, undoubtedly a couple of the greatest to have ever lived) their clashing styles and process speaks volumes to the individualism of the complex art form of borosilicate lampworking. That write-up reminded me of this video and prompted me to edit and post it. While finishing this 10-artist collaboration piece at the 2017 Michigan Glass Project, thier adversarial energy was palpable. See for yourself. So much focus and hard work went in from all of the artists involved and it shows in the completed object. I can’t but I will try anyway. First I will explain that despite the profound respect I have for @banjoglass and his contribution to our community, while making this piece we were as adversaries while also collaborators. Both in style and technical execution we are polar opposites in many ways. Before putting any glass in the flame we discussed at length what concept or ideas we were going to illustrate. Together we posses such a wide range of skills and tools that the vast expanse of possible themes stretched out before us as a seemingly endless ocean of potential. It was overwhelming to say the least. In other words we felt as though we could do almost anything and with those infinite choices found it difficult to decide on just one direction. Finally we realized that what the situation required was for us to zoom out and find the place where many of the themes we were considering converged at a common idea. Thus we began our journey of making and as a compass was the idea of polarities, complementaries and the duality of the universe. These states of opposition are the engine of the universe and they highlight both the mechanisms that allow us to live and grow along with life as a whole, but also the contrasts in which we find our pleasures, our purposes, and our potential. We worked feverishly but not by a blueprint that illustrated our every move. We worked by the candlelight of a basic intention. We clashed and ground against each other’s styles and idea of execution, at times almost arguing. Each decision for each part became a little battleground. As we clashed we sharpened each other, neither of us backing down easily. This made each part of our project squeeze through the narrow aperture of both of us being fully satisfied that it was perfect and each hard fought decision informed the direction of the next. We ate and slept and took care of the necessaries but only as a brief reprise. The work at hand ruled our thoughts and efforts, neither of us relaxing our focus. As we worked we also out of necessity moved from his home studio to @studioalchemy for a night and then finally to the grounds of the @dfofamilyreunion itself. The travel and the work brought into focus how much our process reflected our concept and the work itself had no choice but to follow suit. The Devi sits in the midst of this turmoil a quiet reflection of the storm created by the opposing forces. They clash and mix together around her and she holds within her parts of each. The organic and the mechanical, each within each other pushing against and also working together. The light and dark swirling and mixing making a thunderstorm of destruction that feeds creation and a creation capable of destroying. Both existing because of each other, defined by each other and refined though their opposition. To say the least my respect for Banjo grew during this process and I knew we were making something special by being able to maintain a state of being both adversary and ally simultaneously thus holding with ourselves an example of our concept throughout the process. It was a hell of a ride and I can honestly say that while I always go hard this one got everything that I had from start to finish and we used every second we had available to us, ( and a few we didn’t lol 😂 ), to make what you see and we were not alone. @sethjones was there with for almost every second making prep work and grinding and we even enlisted @peltzerglass for a couple of days too. In fact anyone who stood close enough for long enough during the public parts of this project were inevitably swept up in the process and enlisted to hold things and open the kiln. Thanks to @bossglass @jmassglass @pinkybrewtz and anyone else I’m forgetting for the extra hands and thank you for taking the time to read this. @banjoglass and I proudly introduce “Devi of the Devine Dichotomy “ Salt.”
