Jaw cyst surgery procedure depends upon the size of the jaw cyst. 1. Small Cysts –day care procedure under local anaesthesia. Called enucleation, the procedure involves lifting a small gum flap, removing a small amount of bone, and complete cyst removal. The cavity is washed and filled with a bone graft or growth factors, followed by suturing to close the wound. 2. Large Cysts – two-step procedure. a. Sample Biopsy, which determines the next stage of treatment. b. Second-stage surgery – i. marsupialisation or decompression - a small window is created in the cyst wall to allow for continuous drainage. ii. Enucleation or complete cyst removal. iii. Jaw resection – removal of part of the jawbone around the cyst in severe cases. The duration of the second-stage surgery is determined by a combination of the biopsy result, size, type and extent of the cyst, adjacent structures involved, infection and jaw fractures.
