What is Hilar Cholangiocarcinoma? Hilar cholangiocarcinoma is a type of bile duct cancer that occurs in the bile ducts that lead out of the liver (hepatic ducts) and join with the gallbladder. Types of Hilar Cholangiocarcinoma: Type 1 / Type 2 – When the bile duct cancer is spread in the common bile duct and the surrounding area. Type 1/ Type 2 patients are treated with Extrahepatic Biliary Tract Excision. Type 3 / Type 4 –The bile duct cancer moves towards the liver where it spreads in the right or left hepatic duct. The treatment method to cure such cancer is Hepatectomy with Biliary Tract Excision. Before surgery doctors check the overall health of the patient, doctors suggest biliary decompression for jaundice-affected patients. Liver resection depends on how much percentage of the liver is affected, some require right hepatectomy or left hepatectomy.
