Type: Semiautomatic pistol Produced: 1924-1927 Caliber: 6,35 mm Browning (6,35x16 mmSR/.25 Auto) Action: Blowback Trigger: Single action Safety: Thumb lever (frame), firingpin indicator Magazine: 5 rounds Sights: Rear, sighting groove; Front, blade shape fixed Grooves: 6 grooves, right-hand twist Barrel length: 2.17" (55 mm) Overall length: 5.75" (105 mm) In the early 1920s there was a large market for vestpocket pistols and it was saturated with small, lightweight pistols such as the Walther Model 9, the Melior, and the Mann Pistol. At that time the Sauer & Sohn (S&S) Company was still producing its superb Model 1919. In 1924 or 1925 it introduced a new pistol which was called Westentaschen-Modell (WTM) in 6,35 mm Browning, which was slightly larger than the Walther Model 9. Some collectors have designated it WTM 24, however this is an artificial name based on the most likely year of introduction. The original gun was simply referred to as the WTM. It's a fixed-barrel blowback with a large ejection port in the slide. The separate breech block was held in the slide by a spring catch. The striker protruded frome the rear of the slide to indicate when the pistol was cocked and the slide had vertical cocking grips at both ends. A modified WTM was introduced in 1928, with refined contours and the breech block forged integrally with the slide. The slide had obliquely cut finger-grips at the rear end only. The revised WTM was produced for no mor than four years before another change was made. The slide was made even smoother and the ejection port moved to the right side. In this form, the WTM remained in production until 1939. Unfortunately the WTM was of a rather complicated construction, so only about 8,300 pieces were built.
