Spinal cord injuries can lead to the loss of both mobility and sensation. While extensive work has been done to restore mobility, less attention has given to helping spinal cord injury patients regain their sense of touch, which means these patients often cannot feel the contact of their loved ones or respond appropriately when something causes them physical pain. Injured spinal sensory neurons cannot repair themselves, so Sandeep Gupta is working in Samantha Butler’s lab to make spinal sensory neurons from embryonic stem cells. This research will help him understand how spinal sensory neurons develop naturally in the body and hopefully harness that process to ultimately restore the sense of touch after spinal cord injury.
