During Baby Loss Awareness Week, I spoke in Parliament about my constituents Sherena and Jack, and their daughter Maia, who was stillborn on 29th November 2024. Maia’s death was preventable. She was failed by outdated and unsafe maternity practices at Kingston Hospital, where local policies on foetal growth monitoring diverged from national standards. Their story is a powerful reminder that too many families are being let down by inconsistencies in maternity care, with outdated growth charts still in use in some hospitals. The consequences are devastating. We must have accountability, transparency, and enforcement of national standards across the NHS so that no baby is failed in this way again. We must ensure no parent is ever told “everything is fine” when it is not. I am glad the Health Secretary has ordered the rapid review of maternity services so that lessons learned will lead to changes that are built into the system. If you have been affected by baby loss, support is available from organisations such as Sands, Tommy’s and the Miscarriage Association.
