"Stray" by Richie Beirach. A nice session here at the house yesterday with Neil Olmstead and Barry Smith. We only played compositions from Richie who recently passed. We are all huge fans of him, his playing and compositions. A great guy and musician. I got a chance to hang with him way back. He was in Boston filling in for Gary's improv class. Gary asked me to take care of the logistics for the day and Richie and I hung out in my office. He was a pleasure to host that day and was very generous with his knowledge and time. He showed me really great changes and voicings on Stella as well as some other concepts. He was a master at harmony and his collaborations with Dave Liebman were great. I loved his playing in terms of concept, sound and feel. All of the tunes we played in the session were really interesting and elicited a strong mood.
