Smiling and waving at reporters, Hutomo "Tommy" Mandala Putra was escorted by dozens of police officers into the Jakarta police headquarters at dusk. It was the first time he had been seen in public since going into hiding a year ago as Indonesia's most wanted man. Since then police have been accused of allowing him to remain at-large. Police said said a 15-member team raided a house belonging to an acquaintance of Tommy in the luxury housing estate in southern Jakarta. Jakarta Police Chief Sofyan Jacob told a packed news conference Suharto surrendered peacefully to the officers. Suharto told reporters that when the time came, he would "clarify everything." Police said Suharto had been arrested for allegedly ordering the killing of Supreme Court Justice Syafiuddin Kartasasmita in July. Last November, Kartasasmita had sentenced Suharto to 18 months in prison for corruption surrounding a multimillion-dollar land scam, a move which prompted Tommy's disappearance. The land scam that cost the state the equivalent of 11 (m) million US dollars. Kartasasmita was murdered by two gunmen on motorbikes who were later arrested and claimed Tommy had paid them to kill the judge. Police and the government have also linked Suharto to a series of bomb attacks, including one at the Jakarta Stock Exchange last year in which more than a dozen people were killed. Tommy was also accused of collaborating with separatists fighting for the independence of the northwestern province of Aceh and with other anti-government groups. He is the first member of the rich former first family to be convicted of corruption. Last year, charges against the Suharto, 81, were dropped after he claimed to be too ill to face trial. During Suharto's 32-year reign, his youngest son was Indonesia's golden boy who built himself an international business empire worth an estimated 800 (m) million US dollars.
