Scarf Joints & Timber Framing Our Smokehouse Roof | Portuguese Quinta Renovation Ep. 9 In this Episode of our Portuguese quinta farmhouse renovation, we dive deeper into traditional timber framing as we build the smokehouse roof structure from scratch. We’re attempting one of the most traditional timber framing techniques this week — cutting our very first scarf joint to extend structural beams for our smokehouse roof. But getting the joists to sit properly meant cutting into solid stone and concrete… and nothing went exactly to plan. We also: Cut stone and concrete to precisely fit the roof joists Drilled and fitted the wall plate into solid masonry Installed structural joists for the smokehouse roof frame Continued our off-grid farmhouse renovation in Portugal Alongside the heavy construction work, we made progress on our homestead dreams — building a greenhouse and planting vegetables to grow our own food here at the quinta. This project combines DIY renovation, traditional carpentry, stone masonry, rural living, and Portuguese farmhouse restoration. Whether you're following along for timber framing techniques, smokehouse construction, homesteading in Portugal, or countryside renovation inspiration, we’re glad you’re here.
