This is a rare, kinescope episode of the 1950's non-fiction television series hosted by Bill Burrud titled "Treasure with Bill Burrud”. The series originally ran on KCOP TV. Burrud was a notable child actor and television host and producer best known for his travel programs. It's difficult to know how much of this particular episode is factual. The only story that appears somewhat similar involves Herbert Herzog, a half-Jewish Viennese merchant who was also a survivor of the Buchenwald Concentration Camp. In 1945, Herzog led troops of the 3rd US Infantry Division to a hiding place in the mountains at Badgastein near Salzburg in Austria. Gold coins weighing almost 9000 pounds were recovered. Famously, Herzog never received any reward for his efforts and the gold ended up in the Austrian State Bank. Eerie shots of skiers running down black and white slopes of Austria (:13). A black hand grips for surface air under thick snow (:29). Burrud (:41) explains the episode shows the struggle between two German troopers during WW2 struggling to find a rich gold mine in the Australian Alps. This mission was ordered by Hitler as a desperate attempt to continue to fund the German portion of the war. Years later, a couple locate a body in the snow in the slopes during a stay at a ski resort (1:25). The man scrapes snow aside (1:32). He makes a haunting discovery; the man was wearing a Nazi uniform. He locates a small red notebook (2:19). Hitler appears from nightmares past (2:32). German forces aim a cannon (2:37). Towers of the Munich Cathedral; Frauenkirche (3:23) rise center screen. Bombed out German towers hit by Allied forces follow (3:27). A street sign notes Maximilian Street (3:38). A mining expert (3:49) meets with Army Major; Hans Gerhardt (3:56) for a conference on the project to re-open a goldmine in Badgastein. Snowy tracks run off in front of the train (4:57); Gerhardt heads for Badgastein. His Nazi shoulder patch is zoomed in on (5:20). He meets with a group of former miners (6:03). The miners slip into carts for the mine shaft (6:28). The mine proves to be barren (6:55). He searches surrounding areas (7:06). While running off a ski slope, (7:52) he reminisces about the bitter changes the war brought into his life. He hits a group of rocks (8:45) collecting a sample and noting an ore deposit. Hans finds a deposit of gold (9:55). Gearhart pricks at the ore with his hunting knife (10:07). He takes notes on the location and accidentally leaves his hunting knife behind (11:05). Scenes flick to a beer hall in Badgastein for an ominous meeting between Gearhart and a Nazi Gestapo member (11:24). Gearhart begins a report for the mining engineer (11:35). The pair toast a victory over the Allies (12:04). Hans denies finding gold (12:28) a blatant and terrifying lie. The Gestapo officer decides to accompany Gerhardt as he searches for gold he had already located (12:46). The pair head for the mountains (13:26). Three armed Nazi ski troops accompanied the mission (14:03). Gearhart removes his pack, his notebook falls into snow (14:27). The Gestapo man grabs the notebook (14:34) uncovering the overlay of the gold deposit. Hans realizes the notebook is missing (15:22). He peels off on skis (15:38). Nazis run down the slope after (15:49). The Gestapo man reaches the rocks and Gerhardt’s hunting knife (18:04). He digs into the rock for gold (18:27). A gun fight erupts on the snowy slopes (18:56). Gunfire unleashes an avalanche (19:42); snow pummels down. Scenes flash forward to peacetime as the Austrian skier flicks through a dead man’s notebook (19:59). Strangely enough one of the skier’s names is Hans Gerhardt, a former major of the Wehrmacht (20:39). Skiers head back for the lodge (21:10). Hans takes the overlay drawn years prior and tosses it into the snow (21:21). The gold was then used to aid a peacetime Germany due to the valiant efforts of Hans Gerhardt (21:30). The film concludes with the President of the United States seal (21:57). Credits appear (23:53). The film was produced by Bill Burrud Productions in Hollywood (24:34). A Western Airlines advertisement concludes the episode (24:40).
