In this second round, we want to share with you three transcriptions that we have made for our romantic guitar duo and one made by the guitarist Mauro Giuliani, exactly at the time period of our instruments. We are playing two guitars by François Roudhloff, a luthier from the Mirecourt school, probably dating from 1825 and 1827. L’Egiptienne, Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683-1764) Jean-Philippe Rameau left us numerous short character pieces, typical of the French baroque harpsichord. L'Egiptienne was published in his book Nouvelles suites de pièces pour le clavecin in 1728. The addition of nuances and colours specific to our instruments sheds new light on this exciting score. Valse Brillante Op. 34 No. 2, Frederic Chopin (1810-1849) We like to take some sublime pages composed in the 19th century for the pianoforte, the leading instrument of salon concerts, just like the guitar at that time. The Valse Brillante Op. 34 No. 2 was composed in 1831 by Frederic Chopin during his stay in Vienna. The work builds on the danse rhythm to develop a captivating lyricism and depth. Mélodie pour le piano Op. 4 No. 2, Fanny Hensel-Mendelssohn (1805-1847) Some ten years earlier, in Berlin, Fanny Hensel-Mendelssohn was told by her father that music should be merely “an ornament” for her, while her brother Felix could make a profession of it. Despite being forced to remain in the shadows, she never stopped composing. Her Mélodie pour le piano Op. 4 No. 2 combines simplicity with a striking accuracy of expression. Sinfonia nell’Opera Il Pirata del Sig. Maestro Bellini, Vincenzo Bellini (1801-1835) / Mauro Giuliani (1781-1829) In the first half of the 19th century, the prestige of Italian opera was such that instrumental pieces based on popular operas flourished throughout Europe: variations on a well-known tune, potpourris, transcriptions of overtures, etc. Guitarists had nothing to envy and played an important part in spreading this music outside theatres. The Italian Mauro Giuliani (1781-1829) transcribed for two guitars the overture to the opera Il Pirata, Vincenzo Bellini's first triumph created in 1827 at La Scala in Milan. A delightful transcription that highlights the orchestral dimension of the guitars by giving them the opportunity to play Bellini’s theatrical contrasts, overflowing energy and swirling crescendos.
