Back pain in those living with scoliosis is common and a recent research article in "Spinal Deformity" looked at what factors play into an increased risk of back pain. Check out the link to the article: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/38910... It is titled "Back pain in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: frequency and risk factors" They look at factors such as: Location of scoliosis Size of the curve Age Skeletal Maturity Insurance It is really interesting to see their results and see that there are many things that can, and do, influence the development of back pain in adolescents with scoliosis. Many times, I have scoliosis patients who come to the clinic that have been told "Scoliosis doesn't cause back pain!". They are confused, then, why they have back pain more than their peers. To say scoliosis doesn't cause back pain might be correct in that the curving of the spine and the etiology doesn't create pain, but the imbalances in the muscles and joints definitely can! In this video I go over my thoughts on back pain with scoliosis. Hopefully it is helpful to understand that yes, scoliosis can contribute to back pain! There are many treatment options for scoliosis. My favorite is using The Schroth Method with adolescents, as well as adults, to reduce the imbalance the scoliosis creates and improve postural control. It isn't a quick fix, but it is quite effective.
