The UT Health Science Center Family Medicine Residency Program in Tyler offers an exciting and comprehensive approach to learning. Our environment provides unopposed training, a well-balanced lifestyle, and a wide variety of clinical pathology to prepare you for any practice setting. In fact, our graduates have found fulfilling careers in healthcare as: Hospitalists Sports Medicine Physicians Obstetricians Hyperbaric Specialists Hospital Administrators Emergency Room Physicians Hospice Specialists Geriatricians Academic Faculty Traditional Family Medicine Clinicians Our Family Medicine Residency program includes not only world-class training, but working for the University of Texas Health System offers additional perks. That, along with living in or near Tyler, makes for an exciting and exceptional residency experience. The program offers training in the UT Health East Texas system, which consists of ten hospitals and more than 50 clinics, so residents are working in multiple settings, both urban and rural, providing unique training opportunities. Additionally, the flagship hospital of the system, located in downtown Tyler - UT Health Tyler - is a Level 1 trauma center, where our family medicine residents have the opportunity to work with specialists and participate in procedures. The residents gain confidence with central lines, chest tubes, intubations, codes, and much more. We believe in working hard, but we also believe in a work/life balance. For this reason, we specifically designed our schedules with family in mind. Most shifts start at 7:00 a.m. and checkout is at 5:00 p.m. This schedule is beneficial later in residency when you have the opportunity to moonlight. With approval from the program director, our second and third residents can moonlight and earn extra money. In Tyler, you’ll get the training you need to do just about anything. Even better, third-year residents have 4.5 blocks of electives to tailor their training. You may decide you want to stay in our area for practice. There are many opportunities available, and a heavy percentage of our faculty are graduates of our program. That speaks for itself, right? At the Health Science Center, we offer both an MPH and MHA program. If you are so inclined, these classes can be worked in to your three years of training, with tuition reimbursement offered. Healthcare is a multidisciplinary service, and we want our graduates to have a competitive edge. Even without pursuing the extra degree, our residents receive a lot of practice management instruction. We offer a robust Quality Improvement curriculum in which the residents from all programs are heavily involved. Tyler and Northeast Texas are home to friendly communities, a beautiful landscape, and an excellent cost of living. Tyler has the amenities of a larger city, as well as state parks and lakes for the outdoor enthusiasts. There’s a lot of history in the area, which is showcased through special events and designated historic districts. The program’s “Spouse Alliance” provides support and fellowship with likeminded peers. The family medicine residents along with their spouse alliance are a social group and appreciate all that Tyler and East Texas has to offer for recreational activities. Last but certainly not least is our 100 percent board pass rate. Need we say more? Apply to learn even more during our interview season! https://www.uthct.edu/fm-welcome
