The Carefree, But Not Careless Man | Devotional | Daniel

So we pick up in the story with king Belshazzar heeding his wife's advice and calling for Daniel to interpret the writing on the wall. And so they find him and bring him in. And I'm pretty sure that Daniel walks into an interesting scene. It's probably like walking into a party that just got busted up. There's booze and babes everywhere, but the king is pretty shaken up, so the DJ and dancers are all watching. Daniel is now center stage, and the room is quiet when the king says this: "But I have heard that you can give interpretations and solve problems. Now if you can read the writing and make known to me its interpretation, you shall be clothed with purple and have a chain of gold around your neck and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom." Then Daniel answered and said before the king, "Let your gifts be for yourself, and give your rewards to another. Nevertheless, I will read the writing to the king and make known to him the interpretation. — Daniel 5:16-17 So the king promises purple, plenty, and promotion. But Daniel just doesn't care. The king's little ploy at public promotion doesn't persuade him. And here's why. Daniel knows two things. First, Daniel knows there is only one King, and it wasn't Nebuchadnezzar, and it was never going to be Belshazzar. He can read the writing on the wall when he walks in. The kingdom is going to fall in just minutes. And by the way, Daniel has been down this road before. Between the ages of 15 and 50, he was the second most powerful man in the land. So there was no purple, plenty, or promotion that would ever persuade him. Second, Daniel knows that submitting to God is the most carefree way to live. So he doesn't care about purple, plenty, or promotion because none of these things matter to him. Now he's not about to act carelessly. Still, he has absolute freedom from the world's pleasures, so he will not be persuaded to interpret the writing to get these things, but instead because it's God's purpose. So let me say something here about this. There are times righteous men do the right things and get promoted for doing them. But the promotions we get are not the reason we do them. We do them because they are right and righteous, and God wants us to do them. Occasionally we will see some benefit from doing them, and we have to be careful not to get enticed by them. As God's man, we get to steward some things that are greater than purple, plenty, or promotion — like God's purpose. And right here, Daniel stewards God's purpose in God's way. So get out there and promote God today. Don't be persuaded to promote him for your purposes. ASK THIS: Are you trying to promote yourself or God? DO THIS: Promote God today. PRAY THIS: God, give me a chance to promote you and not myself today. PLAY THIS: Praise The Lord, Oh My Soul.
