Let's think about what happens with implantation and your cycle: FSH stimulates an egg to grow inside a follicle (the follicular phase). That egg makes estrogen as it matures. High estrogen levels trigger an LH surge to be sent out from the pituitary gland. The LH surge allows for follicle rupture and ovulation. The follicle then makes progesterone *stimulates by LH pulsing from the brain, the follicle is now called a corpus luteum. The corpus luteum will only respond to LH for about 2 weeks (the luteal phase). If implantation starts to occur, the pregnancy will make hCG which can rescue the corpus luteum - allowing it to continue to make progesterone. Essential for the early pregnancy to survive. hCG production causes a steady and increased amount of progesterone - leading to certain "implantation symptoms" in some people.
