Assoc Prof Jamus Lim told Parliament during the Budget 2026 debate on 25 February 2026 that Singapore must rethink education for an AI era. While backing the Budget’s tilt towards preparing for artificial intelligence, he warned AI could overturn long-standing advantages of the “Singapore model” by shrinking the skills gap that schooling once created. He urged smaller primary school class sizes so teachers can give students stronger foundations, with technology used to complement—not replace— human instruction. He also argued for less reliance on high-stakes exams like the PSLE and O-Levels, calling for genuine continual assessment that supports learning rather than sorting students. At universities, he said the focus should shift from rote knowledge to distinctly human strengths such as judgment, creativity, and empathy, while research should prioritise better questions over chasing rankings.
