The red-spotted purple butterfly, scientifically known as Limenitis arthemis astyanax, is a striking subspecies of the white admiral found mainly in the eastern United States and parts of southern Canada. Although its wings look black at first glance, they shimmer with iridescent blue or blue-green in sunlight and feature bright red-orange spots along the edges of the hindwings, especially visible from underneath. With a wingspan of about 3–4 inches (7.5–10 cm), this butterfly is known for mimicking the poisonous Battus philenor to help protect itself from predators. Its caterpillars cleverly resemble bird droppings for camouflage and feed on trees such as wild cherry, willow, and poplar. Adult butterflies drink nectar as well as tree sap, rotting fruit, and even animal droppings, and they are strong, fast fliers that often glide smoothly between wingbeats.
