In this video we discuss Steven Hassan’s BITE Model and the high-control behaviors we experienced. Was our church a cult? That question felt extreme—until we learned about the BITE Model, a framework used to identify coercive control in groups. In this video, we explain the BITE Model (Behavior, Information, Thought, and Emotional control) and show how these tactics were used in our former church to enforce obedience, suppress questions, and maintain authority. Many high-control churches don’t look like cults. They often appear loving, biblical, and community-oriented on the surface. But beneath that image, control can be enforced through fear, shame, spiritual threats, and isolation. In this video, we break down the BITE Model of authoritarian control, developed by cult expert Steven Hassan, and explain how these tactics showed up in our former church. The BITE Model outlines four types of control used in high-control groups: Behavior Control Information Control Thought Control Emotional Control If you’ve ever thought, “Something wasn’t right, but I couldn’t explain it,” this may help put language to your experience. #HighControlChurch #SpiritualAbuse #ReligiousTrauma #CultAwareness #ChurchAbuse #ReligiousControl #Deconstruction #CultRecovery
