Singapore's national anthem Majulah Singapura, national flag, and first head of state Yusof Ishak, have stood as symbols of the country's founding ideals - such as equality and multiculturalism - for the past 60 years. When Singapore became self governing in 1959, it fell to Deputy Prime Minister Toh Chin Chye to design the flag, while a song by composer Zubir Said became the anthem.
