Suvi from the Grounded Permaculture gives a walkthrough of his food forest, explaining how a once-bare hill has been planted and developed over about five years. He describes a staged approach that starts with pioneer “mulch plants” like sugarcane, arrowroot, and bananas to rapidly cover ground, generate large amounts of biomass, and build soil and moisture-holding capacity, with cassava, taro, and cocoa yam as key carbohydrate crops. As the system establishes, he spaces in fruit trees and other edible plants, highlights the role of canopy in buffering heat, frost, and creating microclimates, and shares strategies for canopy management including ring-barking large branches to increase light without damaging the understory. He also discusses windbreak and bank-stabilizing plants, and demonstrates practical sugarcane management for mulch, animal pressure, and easy propagation. 00:00 Welcome and Backstory 00:52 New Planting Zone Tour 01:30 Taro and Pioneer Crops 02:58 Sugarcane Biomass Power 04:32 Self Seeding Cassava 05:15 Adding Fruit Trees 07:27 Mid Forest Walkthrough 10:57 Top of Hill Origins 12:50 Canopy Management Tips 13:55 Ring Barking Strategy 17:17 Microclimate Diversity 23:01 Food Plants Showcase 25:03 Soil and Windbreaks 26:52 Sugarcane Handling Demo 30:38 Wrap Up and Goodbye
