Our 2025 KTM 890 Adventure R review. Many say it's the leader in its class if you want to ride aggressively in rough terrain and also cruise on the highway. A quick history for our KTM 890 Adventure R review. In 2018 the 790 Adventure R was introduced. Most owners were very impressed. Others say it's a ticking time bomb because the dreaded camshaft problems aren't fixed. Let's take an objective look. Welcome to Cross Training Adventure, we are into all things dual sport and adventure on the east coast of Australia. First? Unfortunately others had the dreaded camshaft failures with very poor support from KTM initially. A small percentage had issues with clogged fuel filters, oil leaks, and brake issues. 2023. Check out our reviews of various adventure bikes and dual sport bikes. New bodywork, new windshield, reworked suspension settings. 2024 Pirelli tyres, upgraded display, seat, screen, suspension, ABS. The 890 Adventure R is introduced with a larger more powerful engine and tweaked suspension. 2025 New graphics. It's also worth mentioning the Husqvarna 901 Norden in this KTM 890 Adventure review. It is essentially a very similar model but more road-oriented. It has a lower seat height, less suspension travel, a longer wheelbase, a larger windscreen and a few more electronic features. And of course it's more expensive. If you like dual sport riding in Australia then you might like our adventure riding vids. Okay! Let's review the 890 beast. The CFMoto 890MT-X is essentially a Chinese version of the same motorbike but thousands of dollars cheaper. And to date it has avoided the camshaft failures with their Chinese built version of the LC8 engine. It is very capable off-road. Riders in our group moved up to their 890s from smaller motorbikes like the DR650 or KTM 690. Within a few rides they were feeling almost as confident on dirt tracks as before. A lot of this is due to low centre of gravity due to the location of the fuel tank. It's also a combination of excellent brakes, suspension, and electronic settings to fine-tune the throttle response and traction control. But of course there are still times that weight works against you. Keen on adventure riding in Australia? Check out our vids. The ergonomics are also helpful in making the 890 feel like a big enduro motorbike as it is easy to stand on the footpegs for long stretches. A consistent theme across most reviews is that the electronics are great for taming the beast, especially if you don't have a lot of off-road riding experience. On-road performance in our KTM 890R review? Prefer Japanese motorbikes? The Honda Transalp 750 and Yamaha Tenere 700 are also thousands of dollars cheaper. See our midweight adventure motorbike comparison for more information. A big thumbs-up. Great handling. Comfortable seat. Good fuel range. Plenty of power on tap. The main issue would just be the small windscreen and its lack of adjustment but this is easily solved with an aftermarket screen. Let's look at the potential negatives. The elephant in the room? Camshaft failures! A quick summary? After a lot of pressure KTM eventually acknowledged this happened on 790 models and started a goodwill warranty. They claimed it was fixed in the 890 but an small but unknown number of 890s are failing too. It has forced KTM to provide a four year warranty and it is backdated too. For more details, see our recent video about camshaft failures. Would you consider buying the KTM? Let us know why... or why not? Have you owned a 790 or 890 Adventure? We are keen to hear your positive and negative experiences. While KTM has a cutting edge reputation for innovation, they are also well known for releasing some models with plenty of known issues that only get fixed in the following years. While many 790 and 890 owners have trouble-free experiences, other riders report issues with the mobiliser, oil leaks, front tyre not sealing, sidestand switches, rear shock, wiring failures, and charging system. The good news is that after years of complaints from angry owners with denied warranty claims, KTM is finally trying to restore its reputation and should fix any problems quickly under the extended warranty. We hope. How does the KTM 890 Adventure R compare to the competition? For a serious off-road focus it is hard to beat, although the Chinese Kove 800X is even better suited with its much lighter weight. For a more balanced approach to road and off-road riding, the KTM has some strong competition.
