This Italy property renovation is slowly transforming into a functional off-grid home. I begin in the bathroom installing a new plug socket that will power a future electric towel heater, one of many small decisions that will make the villa comfortable all year round. Outside, my teenage son Eithan joins me as we set up a one-ton compost bag and start cutting back overgrown prickly pear pads. Rather than waste the material, we’re turning it into future compost for the garden, another step toward long-term sustainability. On the veranda, I pot wild fennel plants rescued from the garden, remove temporary boarding from the kitchen doors, strengthen the timber framing, and apply Mapei Primer G in preparation for rendering work. We also temporarily remove generator and solar ducting to allow the plasterers clear access before reinstalling it later, always thinking ahead in this renovation. With the reveals now rendered, I measure every window and opening as I prepare to obtain quotes for new aluminium windows and doors, a major upcoming milestone for the villa. To finish the day, I upgrade my petrol strimmer with a heavy-duty universal metal head and tackle the garden after dark… because renovation days don’t end when the sun goes down.
