This mosque also contains the tomb (maqam) of Saint Thangal Uppapa, a revered Muslim saint originally from Kollam who lived and served in the Kasaragod – Mangalore region 🌙 What Is Uroos? “Uroos” (also spelled Urs) refers to a religious commemoration of the death anniversary of a Muslim saint. It is a time when devotees gather to remember and honor the saint’s life and teachings through prayers, recitations, and community activities. About Thangal Uppapa: Muhammed Haneef Valiyullahi, popularly known as Thangal Uppapa, was a respected Muslim saint who passed away on 6 September 1962. His tomb at Nellikunnu has become a pilgrimage site, drawing devotees from Kerala, Karnataka, and beyond. When It Happens: The Thangal Uppapa Uroos is held once every two years (biennially). Traditionally, it falls around the Islamic month of Dhu al-Hijjah (the last month of the lunar year), but local dates can vary. Recent editions have taken place in January (e.g., Jan 7 – 18 2026) with an 11-day schedule of religious talks, prayers, and communal meals. 📜 Festival Activities: During the Uroos, the mosque grounds host: Religious discourses (majlis, madrasa sessions) by scholars and speakers. Daily prayers and Qur’anic recitations. Community meals and distribution of food to devotees (often feeding large crowds). Medical camps and social gatherings for participants. The final day typically features mass feeding (nercha/neichaor or similar offerings). 👥 Who Attends: Devotees of all ages and from different communities attend.
