Watch how a Flemish reporter talking Dutch can communicate effortlessly with an unprepared Charlize Theron responding in her own native tongue. This clip from the Flemish TV show "De Rode Loper", sent on channel "Één" in 2009, shows a rare occasion where Charlize Theron responds in Afrikaans when interviewed in Dutch by Belgian movie reporter Ward Verrijcken. The footage is owned by the Flemish Broadcasting Company VRT, but brought to you here under the terms of "Fair Use", since the purpose of the (low-quality) video is for educational purposes. Afrikaans is a daughter language of Dutch which developed on South African soil during the past four centuries. It has been heavily influenced by other immigrant Europeans like the English, French and Germans as well as Native languages like Khoisan, Tswana and Xhosa. What do you think? Should Afrikaans and Dutch be considered a single language? Should they be made into a multipolar language like other world languages? Or are they too different? Share your thoughts below...
