The real sounds of the African wilderness

African wilderness ambience - no loop. The sounds of Africa's wilderness can be incredibly immersive and beautiful. The savannas of Southern Africa are full of noisy birds and other wildlife, and they are especially vocal just before the start of the rainy season. And during this period, dawn choruses are the most lively moments in the day/night cycle. Armed with this knowledge, I headed to Botswana to record these amazing soundscapes. But knowing when to go is only a small part of the equation. Lots of areas that might look wild are in fact polluted by man-made noise. Traffic, aircraft, generators, cattle, and the list goes on... Getting away from the distant noise of humans is becoming increasingly more difficult even in this part of the world. Even after identifying a few areas with great potential, mostly in the centres of national parks and reserves, the work is not complete. Walking around at dawn, it's surprising how sparse and/or quiet the savanna is. How could this be? This is an amazing location on paper, but it seems like all the birds are not home! Beyond vague geographic location, I had to look for localised topographic features that encourage wildlife to congregate in certain areas. Since the rains are late this year, I am looking for creeks, pools, water holes and other sources of water that have not yet disappeared. Vegetation is good too, as the birds and other wildlife can use it for cover and nesting. Certain plant species will attract many more insects, which in turn attract birds and so on. A flat landscape might look good, but it's not very inviting for wildlife. Rocks, hillsides, canyons, koppies are all places where action might happen. Eventually I hone in on a little clump of trees at the base of a hill in the savanna. It does not sound like much in the heat of the afternoon, but at dawn this place is buzzing with activity. What's even better, on one side there is a lot of open space which allows sounds to reach the mics from quite far away. On the other side the hillside creates very pleasant reflections that can easily be heard with louder calls. The perfect balance! Recorded in Botswana with Sony PCM A10 and Lom mikroUsi microphones.
