How a mannequin on a film set became Russian propaganda | OSINT

A viral video of two men wrapping a dummy in tape is being used to mislead users online. I walk you through how I got to the truth. #OSINT ------- Editing by Vlatko Vladimirov Translation by Eugene Bondarenko ---- I'm an independent journalist, so if you like my work you can support it here: https://venmo.com/tracingthetruth ---- TRANSCRIPT So you may have come across this video on your feed or if you're a Russian speaker, you might've caught this TV segment And all of these sources will have you believe that you're watching Ukrainian soldiers prepare fake war victims to later stage in towns where fighting is unfolding, but that's a lie that's not actually what's happening in this video. This is actually a TV set in Russia. I'll show you how this lie spread online and how I got to the truth. The video first appeared on Tik Tok on March 29th, 2022. Two men dressed in khaki green and camouflage wrap a dummy. We hear another man's voice in the video. He's speaking Russian and he says: If you're like me and you're trying to figure out what exactly you're watching, the caption can give you another clue. It reads preparing a mannequin for a movie fall. I wanted to know more, so I tried to get in touch with the user. I found his number on Yandex and sent him a message, he wrote back and confirmed that he filmed the video and that he's an actor. He also sent me this screenshot of his phone. It tells us the video was filmed on March 20th in this town outside of St. Petersburg in Russia. To confirm that date, I also uploaded the original video file to this website. It shows you hidden metadata, like time and location. Filip also told me he was working as an actor on this TV series that day and he filmed Alexander Uvarov, a well-known Russian stuntman preparing a dummy for a scene. Alexander even posted about the misleading video on his own Instagram. And I also spoke to someone else working on the set that day. Nadezhda Kolobaeva: My name is Nadezhda Kolobaeva. I'm working as a first assistant director. I found her because she posted about the Russia 24 segment on her Facebook page, attempting to clear up the truth. So what we're actually seeing in that video is not Ukrainian soldiers preparing false bodies? Nadezhda Kolobaeva: It's not Ukrainian soldiers. It's my friend Sasha, and he's assistant Gennady. And it's preparing a dummy by wrapping by scotch tape. She also sent us more photos and videos where we see the man and the crew prep, the dummy to take a fall here. We see Alexander dropping the dummy on a car. So how did this lie spread? A week after it was seen over a million times on Filip's TikTok. This Telegram channel shares the video out of context on April 6 and they falsely claim that we're watching Ukrainian armed forces prepare fake bodies to stage in Ukrainian cities and blame Russia. A similar lie is also shared on Twitter by progression. In English, and even in French, a day later on April 7th, brushing state television picks up the video. Most likely from that channel since the watermark is the same and they continue to perpetuate that same lie. Now to put this all in context, it's happening the same week, Russian government officials and Russian state TV are attempting to discredit visual evidence of atrocities committed in Boucher while occupied by Russian forces on April 7th. Filip posts again on TikTok. This time to clear up any misunderstandings about his video. If you're seeing a video online and you're unsure whether it's real or not, or maybe it's been taken out of context, like the one we just saw send it to me and I'll verify it.
