Santorini, is a Greek island in the southern Aegean Sea, about 200 km (120 mi) southeast from the mainland. It is the largest island of a small, circular archipelago formed by the Santorini caldera. It is the southernmost member of the Cyclades group of islands, with an area of approximately 73 km2 (28 sq mi) and a 2021 census population of 15,480. The municipality of Santorini includes the inhabited islands of Santorini and Therasia, and the uninhabited islands of Nea Kameni, Palaia Kameni, Aspronisi, Anydros, and Christiana. The total land area is 91 km2 (35 sq mi). Santorini is part of the Thira regional unit. It is the most active volcanic centre in the South Aegean Volcanic Arc. The volcanic arc is approximately 500 km (300 mi) long and 20 to 40 km (12 to 25 mi) wide. The region first became volcanically active around 3–4 million years ago,[citation needed] though volcanism on Thera began around 2 million years ago with the extrusion of dacitic lavas from vents around Akrotiri. One of the largest volcanic eruptions in recorded history struck the island about 3,600 years ago, leaving a large water-filled caldera surrounded by deep volcanic ash deposits. The name "Santorini" is a contraction of Saint Irene, after an old church in the village of Perissa. Of Venetian influence, the island bore the name Santorini since at least the middle of the twelfth century, the first mention being made by the geographer Al Idrissi c. 1154. During antiquity it was known as "Thēra" and before then, according to ancient writers, as "Kallístē" (Καλλίστη, "the most beautiful one"), and — according to a modern tradition — as "Strongýlē" (Στρογγύλη, "the circular one"). The ancient name Thera, for Theras, the leader of the Spartans who colonized and gave his name to the island,[9] was revived in the nineteenth century as the official name of the island and its main city, but the colloquial Santorini is still in popular use. The Three Bells of Fira , officially known as The Catholic Church of the Dormition, is a Greek Catholic church on the island of Santorini. The church is known for its blue dome, three bells and views. The building is located in the town of Fira, directly above the cliffs which dominate western Santorini. The site of the modern Three Bells of Fira has been occupied by a number of other buildings. In the mid-17th century, two modest cave churches were built into the then-solid cliff face. These churches were eventually destroyed as the cliff receded (due to the ongoing expansion of Fira) and an infirmary was built. This building was eventually occupied by Jesuits, who lived on the site until the land was given to the Diocese of Santorini. The current church was built in 1757, and then refurbished and expanded multiple times over the centuries. The structure was heavily damaged in the 1956 Amorgos earthquake, after which the building was restored. Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral of the Presentation of Christ, also known as the Cathedral of the Presentation of the Savior. This cathedral is a religious and architectural icon for the island, serving as the seat of the Diocese of Thira, Amorgos, and the neighboring islands. The cathedral was originally built in 1827 to commemorate the Presentation of Christ, also called the Hypapanti. However, during the devastating 1956 earthquake that struck Santorini, the cathedral sustained significant damage. Due to the earthquake, the church required massive renovations to regain its former splendor. The church, which combines modern and old architectural forms, has come to represent tenacity. Both inhabitants and visitors may easily reach the cathedral, which is located in the heart of Fira, next to the Museum of Prehistoric Thera. It provides stunning views of the renowned Santorini volcano and the caldera. It is one of the most recognizable buildings on the island due to its distinctive whitewashed exterior, which is flanked by a charming bell tower and an excellent mosaic in the courtyard. The church's front facade's rolling arches are decorative and calming, creating a tranquil courtyard where guests can relax and take in the beautiful scenery. The bell tower and other decorations give the structure an air of grandeur despite its traditional form. Christoforos Asimis, a well-known artist in the area, painted the stunning frescoes that greet guests within the church. The cathedral's walls are covered in exquisite paintings that illustrate scenes from Christian theology and enhance the structure's sacred feel. Known for his ability to paint religious scenes, Asimis has left his stamp on Santorini's churches. His work inside the Metropolitan Cathedral is a prime illustration of his skill.
