Where the Wild Things Are (1963) by Maurice Sendak is a beloved children's picture book. Young Max, dressed in his wolf costume, misbehaves wildly at home—hammering clothes to the wall and chasing the dog—prompting his mother to call him a "wild thing" and send him to bed without supper. In his bedroom, a magical forest grows, leading to an ocean where Max sails for "in and out of weeks and almost over a year" to the island of the Wild Things. The fearsome creatures try to scare him, but Max tames them with a stare and is crowned King of all Wild Things, joining in a joyful rumpus of howling, climbing, and wild play. Eventually feeling lonely and yearning for love, Max sails home, leaving the Wild Things behind despite their pleas. Back in his room, he finds his supper waiting—still hot—symbolizing reconciliation and the safe return from emotional adventures.
