Originally streamed Apr 18, 2023. I had been wanting to try playing CD-i games for awhile... mainly I had been very curious about the Zelda games. After a bunch of technical help, I get the emulator to work and we can finally try them out! Zelda: Wand of Gamelon was developed by Animation Magic for Phillips. A result of the canceled Nintendo and Phillips partnership to make a CD system (which also caused a broken deal with Sony that resulted in Playstation.) These Zelda games are infamous in that Nintendo won't acknowledge them, and are widely considered terrible games. Wikipedia says that many consider these to be among "the worst games of all time." The thing is though that the vast majority of people have never played these games, and are mostly judging it based on videos of the hilariously bad animated cutscenes. Of course, even if you do sit down and play them, the somewhat stiff controls may create a bad impression. But get past those things, and there are actually some really interesting and good things about both of these platformer Zeldas. The hand painted backgrounds are pretty cool looking, and extremely unique for a side-scroller. To go along with the fact that the backgrounds are all hand painted and not tiles based, every area is a small bite sized map. The short size of areas is quite refreshing and different. It also benefits from a surprisingly slick soundtrack, quite catchy and interesting (although admittedly not Zelda sounding at all.) As a game with a heavy emphasis on adventure elements and puzzles, it can get a bit obtuse at times figuring out what to do. Consulting a guide may be desired for certain things, although I was able to beat both side scrolling Zelda's without the need for a guide. Now Zelda's Adventure, you absolutely NEED a guide. These are some of the more severely unfairly maligned games in history, and are well worth going back to and checking out. The CD-i emulator (at least the last I checked) is quite unreliable with many games, but at least with the Zelda games it works perfectly. Check these games out; despite their faults, they are pretty unique, interesting, and cool!
