Pablo Inirio has spent decades mastering the craft of analog darkroom printing, bringing to life the images of iconic photographers including Dennis Stock, Thomas Hoepker, Inge Morath, and Leonard Freed, to name a few. In this video, Inirio reveals his process, including the elaborate markups and notations he employs. To the untrained eye, these markings might appear to be artistic interventions—but they are, in fact, his own guidelines, revealing complex formulas and instructions for how he intends to “dodge and burn” selected areas of the image as it is projected from a negative in an enlarger onto the surface of the print. The various numbers refer to different exposure times he plans to use on portions of the image, compensating for imperfections in the original. With thanks to Pablo Inirio and @BronxDocumentaryCr. The Darkroom Collection is currently on view at Foto Arsenal Wien in Vienna until June 1, 2025, as part of the major Magnum: A World of Photography exhibition. Delving into the Magnum archive, the exhibition makes public many of the internal processes of the agency and its photographers through a selection of over 300 images and objects from the past seven decades.
