Six satellite images of U.S. army biological base Fort Detrick revealed the untold stories about the eight-month suspension of the mysterious military base, according to a video commentary published on Chinese social media platform Yuyuantantian on Thursday. The satellite images collected from September 2019 to August 2021 disclosed the changes of the military base before and after its suspension from July 2019 to March 2020. As home to the U.S. biological defense programs, Fort Detrick consists of Area A, Area B and undisclosed Area C. The Area A includes the U.S. National Cancer Institute and the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID). The Area B accommodates energy equipment, the landfill for died experimental animals and radioactive materials and a laboratory animal farm. According to a document from the Maryland Department of Environment, the Area C contains the water and wastewater treatment plants on the banks of the Monocacy River. Communities surrounding Fort Detrick are known for its high cancer rates, which are closely related to the water and soil contamination caused by the illegal discharge and leakage of pollutants from the military base. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) ordered the shutdown of the USAMRIID laboratory in July 2019 for reasons of biosafety involving dangerous microbes and claimed that the lab didn't have "sufficient systems in place to decontaminate wastewater". However, the lab soon resumed full operation in March 2020. Satellite images revealed what happened during the eight months of the suspension of the lab. Instead of demolishing the steam sterilization plant and laboratory sewer system as planned in the environment assessment report Fort Detrick released in November 2019, the U.S. army repaired an undisclosed drain outlet in Area A of the military base. The repairment of the drain outlet was not included in the environment assessment report. But the steam sterilization plant and laboratory sewer system the army had claimed to decommission and demolish have still been in operation, as was shown by the satellite photo taken in August 8. It is certain that the report released by Fort Detrick covered up the true reasons behind the closure of the lab. So, what exactly is Fort Detrick hiding behind the incident?
