In February, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) once again formed the government in the North East state of Tripura. However, the formation of the government marked a significant shift in the political landscape as the Tipra Motha party emerged as the main opposition party, representing the Indigenous people of Tripura. Following the government formation, there were meetings between the central home minister, Amit Shah, and BJP president, JP Nadda, with the chief of Tipra Motha, Pradyut Kishor Manikya, in Agartala. During these meetings, assurances were made that the demands of the indigenous people would be taken seriously, and an interlocutor would be appointed to address their concerns. However, the situation took a turn when the state chief minister, Manik Saha, started attacking the chief of Tipra Motha and rejecting their party's demands. This has raised doubts about the BJP's commitment to addressing the concerns of the indigenous population, as it appears they are no longer interested in taking Tipra Motha seriously. With approximately one-third of Tripura's total population being indigenous people, the disillusionment and discontent among this significant demographic have grown. In response to the government's actions, Tipra Motha is now preparing to launch a long agitation in the state to assert their demands and fight for their rights.
