Fishing the local river - part 1: Building A Swim The Bristol Avon is a short walk from my home in Saltford yet I've rarely done any coarse fishing on it - just lure or fly fishing from the bank or kayak...until now! More often than not, other disciplines of angling have drawn me away to fish further afield or onto smaller rivers, but with the cost of travelling and time involved, the idea of coarse fishing locally has become more appealing. So this winter, I have decided to go back to where it all started for me as a child - free fishing on a river, using basic match fishing techniques. This is not a tutorial! I don't know a lot about fishing on deep slow rivers, but the one thing I do know is that if you want to get the best out of any section of river, there is some learning to do. In this video I take a wander to find a quieter spot that I hope to make my own for the weeks and months ahead. A bolt-hole where I can escape to for some solitude, without even needing to drive the car. My aim is to find and create a swim in a neglected and overgrown area, that most anglers would walk straight past. It's a very popular stretch of river, so I want swim that I can call my own. To clear it sufficiently to get some pre-baiting done in advance to futher sessions once the winter flow arrives. To suss it out a little. Find out what's in there and be greatful for small pleasures. I take some very old left over bait and a whip with me but forget my whip rigs rigs. I have my floar rod, but no float box, so end up using one from a handful that are rolling around the bottom of my coat pocket! Thankfully, I find a float that might do the job and set about to try and catch a few different species. Subscribing to the channel helps me to continue my work, which is helping others to enjoy the sport we love. Special thanks to Jason Allen for allowing the use of his music.
