Reviews of weather events, natural disasters, astronomical phenomena and wildlife around the world Abnormal snowfalls, the likes of which even old-timers cannot recall, have hit the easternmost part of Russia. The winter of 2026 has proven to be extremely difficult for all residents of the Kamchatka region. As early as December 2025, Kamchatka received more than three months' worth of precipitation. And in the new year, the heavy snowfalls not only continued, but even intensified. As a result, the streets of cities and villages were completely buried. In some places, the snowdrifts have already reached the height of five stories, but it seems that this is far from the limit. Local utility workers have long since thrown down their shovels and despaired of dealing with the aftermath of the storm. Mostly, specialized equipment is now battling the snow, but even this is not always up to the task. Local residents are forced to adapt to the new conditions. For example, the gigantic piles of snow have become a favorite of extreme sports enthusiasts, who jump out of their windows into the snow. Children also found some entertainment, turning tall snowdrifts in their yards into fun slides. A state of emergency is currently in effect in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. Local authorities admit they are unable to cope with the aftermath of the heavy snowfall, which experts say is the heaviest in 60 years. Several people are known to have died as a result of the severe weather. According to open sources, two men, aged 60 and 62, died after being buried by snow that fell from the roofs of multi-story buildings. The tragic incidents occurred on Sovetskaya Street and near a private home in the Seroglazka district. Meanwhile, some local residents were trapped in their homes due to their entrances being completely covered. These residents include residents of the Gorizont, Severo-Vostok, and 9th Kilometer neighborhoods. According to media reports, people dug their own exits from their apartment buildings, and some began to leave through lower-floor windows. Furthermore, the severe weather caused serious disruptions in food supplies to neighborhood stores in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. According to eyewitnesses, there was no bread, milk, eggs, meat, vegetables, or fruit on the shelves. At present, air travel and public transportation in the Kamchatka region have been severely disrupted. To address the situation, authorities have deployed police and National Guard vehicles to local streets. Emergency Ministry rescuers and ambulance workers are also working with redoubled efforts. In-person classes at schools, technical schools, and colleges have been canceled indefinitely.
