Today you’re looking to buy a yacht but one day you’re going to sell it, and when you do, there are a number of questions you need to ask the person selling your yacht to make sure they’re going to do a great job since they stand to make a lot of money off of you. Hopefully, you’ll allow me to represent you in your purchase but we’ll need to make sure the person who sells your yacht does it quickly and at the highest price point which is really important, for a couple of reasons. 1) Owner Bias – Most owners believe their yachts should sell at one number that’s more than a willing buyer will pay. Some brokers agree to this knowing that it won’t sell but they’ll take inquiring customers and lead them to more realistic options. 2) Price Movement – With every sale, the potential purchase price drops so being competitive with a vessel in great condition is key to optimizing value. 3) Sell Low, Buy High – There are unethical brokers that convince an owner to sell really low, really quickly so that they can convince them to overspend on a purchase which beefs up their commission. That’s why separating a buying broker from a selling broker is important to me and should be for you. But when it comes time to hire a selling broker, you need to ask what they’ve sold in the past, what they currently have listed for sale, how they plan on marketing it, if they will put the boat into boat shows, and who will cover those costs, and how often you expect to communicate and receive results. My criticism is that a lot of brokers, take crappy photos on their phones, put it up and sit back. They go boating shows and get drunk the whole time or walk the show with other clients while a model that knows nothing about your boat sits on it taking selfies, which is a waste of a perfectly good sales opportunity and an entitlement to a rather sizable commission that you’re willing to pay. Speaking of that, that’s 10% so you want to make sure that the person you’re willing to pay is active, agile, and committed to selling your vessel.
