Recording of the majority of an online event hosted by The Devil's Porridge Museum on March 10th 2021. More details below. 30,000 people worked at HM Factory Gretna in World War One, 12,000 of them were women. They came from all over the world to help turn their tide of the War and change the position of women in society. Their work was difficult and dangerous but also vital. No complete list exists of these workers and all that they did in this secret war. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (who visited the Factory) called them 'The Miracle Workers' and we want to find out as much as we can about them. For years, The Devil's Porridge Museum has been researching and compiling as many names and accounts of workers from HM Factory Gretna as possible. Now, thanks to a grant from D&G Coastal Communities Fund, we are able to systematically research and disseminate this information. This project launch event will include: -an introductory talk to the themes and intended outcomes of the project -a look at the research conducted so far and some snippets of hitherto unknown information -an exploration of the research approaches -how people can get involved now remotely/digitally and also in real life in future (coming to this event does not mean you have to get involved, you are welcome to come and listen) -how schools, colleges, universities, teachers, lecturers, students, young people and their parents/guardians can get involved -ample opportunity for questions, suggestions and ideas
