“Joan’s Curiosity” S1-08-08, 12/03/1952 Director: Marc Daniels, Writers: Arthur Stander, Phil Sharp, Frank Tarloff. This is the episode that most fans have on their top ten list. The mailman, played with brilliant apathy by Richard “Dick” Keene, a very frequent flier on IMJ, delivers a large package addressed to Brad. Joan has no prior knowledge of it, so her curiosity is rabidly aroused. She does everything she possibly can to avoid opening it, and even asks Aunt Vera (Elvia Allman), to hide it and not tell her its whereabouts. Aunt Vera convinces Joan to stare down her fears to conquer them, so she locks her in the closet with the package. What transpires is also the same inflating shtick point used years later in a “Dick Van Dyke” episode and a “Patty Duke Show” episode. Brad tells Joan that he is never curious. She sets out to prove him wrong by having all sorts of oddly shaped packages delivered addressed to her. He doesn’t bite. This section ends with a large crate, which seems to house a variety of carnivorous beasts! Another IMJ regular, the very versatile Bob Sweeney, is a court stenographer who takes everything way too seriously! In this episode we find out that they live at 133 Stone Drive in Lawrence, California. We at the JDC delight in presenting this to you, and hope you enjoy it as much as we do sharing it. Thanks!
