This particular maple has never been pruned and it's over 30 years old. While it may be a smaller maple tree than some of the others in our previous videos, this one was very tough because there were so many branches. The attention to detail required a high level of focus. We've done many maple pruning videos before, but this is definitely the longest one. Some of you have asked for a longer more detailed video, so we decided to just let the camera roll (Nolan charged all his batteries this time!) and show several detailed close up shots of how to prune your Japanese maple tree using our bonsai techniques. This style of trimming is called Niwaki in Japan, or simply a garden tree. Bonsai pruning techniques show the structure of the tree. When applied to a garden tree, you get amazing results showcasing the twists and turns of a maple. We never use any power tools to ensure every cut is done with detail and intention. We've been pruning landscape maple trees with this technique for over ten years. Several of you have asked when it's a good time to prune. There are benefits of pruning in each season with weather being the main factor. If you prune in early spring, you get cool sunny weather and you can start to see where the leaves are coming in. The downside is if you prune too early, it all overgrows again by the end of summer. If you prune during the summer season, you get longer days and it's a lot easier to see where the dead branches are and makes designing the structure easier. The downside is it can get incredibly hot. We don't recommend pruning when temperatures are above 90 degrees as it can dry out the new cuts faster. If you prune during the fall, it's easier to navigate around the tree since the leaves start to fall off. The downside is it's tough to see which branches are dead as they start to look the same, so you get a little cross-eyed. We generally don't prune during the winter because it's too cold and too wet. There's no benefits of pruning at this time, so you may as well be patient and wait until the spring. Let us know in the comments about what you think of this video!
