Testing against the Hyperkin 3-in1 cable with the SNES and then showing N64, Genesis, PS1 (well, kinda) working and finally comparing against a generic sub $20 composite "RCA to HDMI" converter with the NES. It may not always initially look as sharp as some of the competing (cheaper) options but when you look closer and find there's no angled lines, no jiggle around movement, no stutter or screen tearing it starts to show its true colors. Add to that the fact that there's zero lag (and you don't have to turn your stereo up to 11 to hear anything!) and what's not to like? It's hard to deny that this thing does the best job at what it was meant to do. That is converting composite or S-Video to HDMI for retro gaming. The generic one may be fine for video capture (from VHS for example) and for the price it works great for that. But that screen tearing was a real surprise and while I haven't seen testing done for this exact one I have seen tests done on similar cheap RCA to HDMI converters showing as much as 145ms of lag! Keeping in mind input lag on TV's can vary anywhere from 15-80ms on average it's good to know using something like the RetroTink that you aren't adding any additional lag to what your TV already has. Your TV may actually have a lot more lag when using the composite or S-Video (if it even has S-Video) than it does using the HDMI ports in gaming mode. Keep in mind your TV normally has to deinterlace (some TV's treat 240p like 480i too!) so your TV itself may have less lag using this and sending 480p via its HDMI ports rather than plugging in the composite or S-Video directly into the TV. This thing was made for retro gaming from the ground up with lag being a key priority. From what I've heard from several sources it's under 2ms and might actually be under 1ms. I've heard it's about 5 scan-lines of lag. Thinking about it one frame is 240 scan-lines and takes apx 16ms for the next frame at 60hz. I'm too tired to do that math right now but that sounds really damn fast to me. Hence I called it almost real-time in the video! Realtime being the analog signal driving the electron beam of a CRT across the screen line by line with no digital intervention in-between! 5 scan-lines. That's insane! I've heard again from several sources that this is said to be faster than even higher end options like the OSCC (although that is still lighting fast, practically zero lag also!) but really what it comes down to is that this is actually zero lag. Zero. I mean unless you're watching a CRT draw line by line this is as fast as a progressive 60hz signal gets! I also like the fact it's more versatile than the options like the 3-in-1 from Hyperkin and other similar cables from Pound etc. Cables that are good for one or several systems only and have both system input and HDMI output cables integrated into the electronics. Like I said in the video. Break that HDMI connector on the end of the cable and the entire scaler is garbage! I'll be selling my Hyperkin cable (at a reasonable price of course to someone who isn't picky!) and keeping this. Honestly you buy a few of those Hyperkin cables for different systems and you've paid for something like this. Granted this doesn't do RGB. This isn't SCART or Component. This is the base model RetroTink! All things considered it does an excellent job at what it was designed to do. Will it ever look as good as RGB? Nope! But remember they also make the Pro 2X and 5X models. Those do have Component YPbPr or RGB for anyone looking to step up to the best of the best! Granted with the silicone shortage the 5X is probably sold out everywhere right now. If you're in a hurry and want something today these x2 Minis seem to be readily available in many places. The other's you might have to wait for!
