This is an original model 1860 Spencer carbine in .56-.56. These designations are unlike later black powder cartridges in that the numbers do not denote the "caliber" and powder charge but the diameter at the base and mouth of the case, respectively. Later models (1865 and 1867) used an improved necked-down version of the cartridge primarily in .56-.50. There is also a wildcat version of the cartridge in .56-.46. The .56-.56 version of the cartridge that I have reproduced for this original model 1860 is a heeled projectile with a diameter of .539 inches, weighing 375 grains. I cast these using 20 parts lead and one part tin. These cases are short, and as a result, I can only get 35 grains of FF Goex in them. With such a weak charge coupled with a heavy projectile, the drop curve at 50, 70, and, 100 yards is quite great and a challenge for accurate target shooting if I may add. A friend of mine helped me fashion a sterling silver front sight for this piece since the original was very worn down and too short, making the rifle shoot about 18 inches above point of aim at 100 yards. We have set this sight to zero out at around 100 yards. As a result, I must hold low at 50 and 70 yards. Any shot past 100 yards requires me to have the front sight ride higher than the rear so that I can "lop" the projectile in. As many know, Spencers were rimfires. I use a centerfire breechblock conversion in this rifle so that I can fire cernterfire cartridges. For those who may not know, be careful when purchasing brass cases to reload for Spencers since the common .56-.50 brass available is for REPLICA Spencers, not originals. Since mine is an original, I've had to use cartridges that were cut down from standard .50-70 cartridges that have been reemed out (making a thinner wall) and have had the rims thinned. Such cartridges for ORIGINAL Spencers are available at Buffalo Arms Co. and perhaps other distributors. I would like to extend an extra thank you to my friend Joe, whose iPhone camera work has made all of these videos possible.
